Carbondale Teen Facing Vehicular Homicide Charge

GARFIELD COUNTY, CO (May 7, 2019) - The teenage driver in a Friday-night car crash that killed one teenager and injured three others appeared in court Monday.

Jesse Lloyd, 18, of Carbondale, is charged with felony vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault, as well as DUI and 3rd-degree assault. He’s also charged with possession of alcohol as a minor.

Lloyd, also on probation for a burglary at the time of the accident, reportedly had a BAC of .0153, according to an affidavit.

The accident happened around 11:45 p.m. Friday two miles up Garfield County Road 102 (Fender Lane) from Highway 82.

“They lost control and collided with a large rock,” said CSP spokesman Ivan Alvarado. “It rolled and a couple of the occupants were ejected.” The ejected occupants were not wearing seat belts, he said.

One of the passengers who was ejected, Tyler Ribich, 16, a junior at Basalt High School, died of his injuries.

According to an affidavit, passenger David Rothman, 19, suffered “serious bodily injury,” after being ejected from the vehicle. Henry Twitchell, 18, who was not ejected from the vehicle, also suffered serious injury. The fourth occupant, 17, suffered minor injuries.

The community is mourning the loss of Ribich, a well-liked and popular student at BHS.

“Families are welcome to send letters of support to BHS, and staff will deliver them to the family,” said Basalt High School Principal Peter Mueller. “The family is asking for privacy during this ‘incredibly difficult’ time.”
